Plunder of Philippines continues

Japan has one of the strongest economies in the world. Obviously Japan can afford to build nursing colleges and train nurses. But it has chosen to drastically cut spending on health and other social services and instead spend the money on the military. And it has decided to import nurses from the Philippines. Japan will get these nurses at no cost: Filipinos will pay for their training with their taxes.

MANILA, Philippines – At 47, electrical engineer Victorio Mangalindan is back in school, studying for a new career as a nurse. His classmates include three lawyers and 10 accountants.

And there are so many doctors!" he said.

Mr. Mangalindan says the foul air and water of Manila will only get worse as his 2-year-old son grows up. He wants to raise the boy in the U.S., and "the surest way to get a working permit or a visa is nursing."

Cheating chills Filipino schools

MANILA, Philippines – So many Filipinos want to work abroad and demand for them around the world is so great that nursing schools have been opening at a feverish pace.

There were 420 nursing schools in the country as of early December, up from 370 at the start of 2005. In 1970, this nation had 140 nursing schools.

Now, a cheating scandal threatens to tarnish the value of Philippine nursing degrees and has led to calls for a crackdown on diploma mills.

City dad wants vocational nursing practice recognized

DAVAO City Councilor Pilar Braga is seeking an amendment to Republic Act 9173, otherwise known as the Philippine Nursing Act of 2002.

Health care professionals, led by Philippine Paramedical and Technical School president Arturo Lacuesta, has clamored for the government to recognize and allow the practice of practical or vocational nurses.

Pinoy nurses seeking US employment up by 65%

Despite the opening of other markets, more Filipino nurses are seeking employment in the United States.

Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) secretary-general and former senator Ernesto Herrera said that over 15,000 new Filipino nurses sought employment in the US — a figure that is 65 percent higher than the number of nurses who sought jobs in the US in the previous year.

15,000 new Pinoy nurses sought US jobs in 2006

More than 15,000 new Filipino nurses sought employment in the United States last year, former senator and labor leader Ernesto Herrera disclosed over the weekend.

Herrera said a total of 15,171 Filipinos took the US National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for nurses for the first time (excluding repeaters) from January to December 2006.
